ONLY 5 HOURS in Helsinki, Finland… We Were NOT EXPECTING THIS!
One of Helsinki’s most beautiful cathedrals is connected to a priest who was later executed during Stalin’s purges. And just a short walk away, another piece of the city’s past was erased to create one of the grandest squares in Finland. According to Helsinki City Museum, archaeological work at Senate Square exposed almost 260 bodies from the cemetery that once surrounded Ulrika Eleonora Church. The remains were documented and later reburied deeper in the same location. In this video, we explore Helsinki, Finland on our own during a short cruise port stop, using the $12 shuttle and seeing just how much we could fit into only five hours. Along the way we visit Old Market Hall, Havis Amanda, Uspenski Cathedral, Senate Square, the National Library of Finland, the Alexander II Monument, and Helsinki Cathedral. But Helsinki wasn’t all dark history. We also tried Finland’s famous Long Drink — Lonkero, found $10 reindeer spring rolls, checked out Finnish food and beer, discovered just how expensive a bowl of soup can be in Helsinki, and learned why one of the city’s most recognizable statues once caused a major controversy. And with the clock ticking, there was still one more problem waiting for us — getting back to the ship. If you’re visiting Helsinki on a cruise and wondering what you can realistically see independently during a short port day, come along and see what we managed to fit into only five hours. ❤️ SUPPORT HUBBARD’S JOURNEY We are not paid by the cruise lines or destinations we feature.
