Kotor, Montenegro: The Cruise Port We Didn't Expect to Love
Kotor, Montenegro may be one of the most beautiful—and most underrated—cruise stops in the Adriatic. 🇲🇪 When our cruise brought our family of six to Kotor, we weren't sure what to expect. What we found was spectacular: towering mountains, brilliant blue water, historic coastal villages, a medieval walled old town, friendly cats, and one of our favorite family excursions of the entire cruise. We took a speedboat tour through the stunning Bay of Kotor, stopping at Our Lady of the Rocks, passing the beautiful town of Perast, cruising through a former Yugoslav submarine tunnel, and seeing historic Mamula Island. The highlight was supposed to be Montenegro's famous Blue Cave, but new regulations now require boats to remain outside the cave. When we arrived, we also saw just how crowded it had become. Instead of swimming into the packed cave with our kids, our guide took us to a secluded cove where we could jump off the boat and swim in unbelievably clear blue water—all by ourselves. After our boat tour, we explored Kotor Old Town, a beautiful medieval city surrounded by massive stone walls. We found great food, did some shopping, explored the winding streets, and discovered why Kotor is so famous for its cats!
