Is Ancient Olympia worth the hour-long trip from the Katakolon cruise port—especially when you're traveling with kids? We weren't sure either! When our cruise ship stopped in Katakolon, Greece, we had a tough decision to make. We could spend the day relaxing near the port, or take the roughly one-hour bus ride to Ancient Olympia to explore one of the most important historical sites in Greece. With kids in tow, we weren't sure whether thousands of years of ancient history would hold their attention. But what happened surprised us. In this video, we take you with us to Ancient Olympia and the Archaeological Museum of Olympia to see what this cruise excursion is really like for a family. We explore the ancient ruins, visit the Temple of Hera and Temple of Zeus, see the original Olympic stadium, and discover some of the incredible artifacts preserved in the Archaeological Museum—including the famous Hermes of Praxiteles. And, of course, the highlight for our kids was getting to run on the ancient Olympic stadium where athletes competed thousands of years ago! So, was Olympia worth giving up a beach day? For our family, the answer was a definite YES.
