Live on the First‑Ever Cruise to Owi Island — West Papua Indonesia
I'm on the first‑ever cruise ship visit to Owi Island off the coast of Papua Indonesia, showing the remote village of 329 residents and Swan Hellenic Secrest of the Coral Triangle route preview. Owi Island, part of the Padaido Archipelago near Biak in West Papua, Indonesia, is a rarely visited destination with a fascinating history. In this short teaser, filmed live in the middle of the village, I share a glimpse of daily life on Owi Island as part of the first cruise ship ever to visit here. This video is designed to give you a taste of the island atmosphere and encourage you to subscribe ahead of my full review of the Swan Hellenic Secrets of the Coral Triangle itinerary and mySH Minerva ship tour in the future. Owi Island is home to around 543 residents across two administrative villages, Owi and Sareidi. The community is predominantly Protestant Christian, with families living in traditional houses and relying on fishing and small‑scale farming. Children play in the sandy lanes, elders gather in shaded areas, and the rhythm of life is closely tied to the sea. Beyond its present‑day charm, Owi Island played a strategic role in World War II. In 1944, Allied forces under General Douglas MacArthur established an air base here after landing in Biak. From June 2, 1944, Owi became a critical staging ground for operations across the Pacific and Southeast Asia. Its flat terrain made it suitable for runways, and remnants of its wartime role remain part of its legacy. The island covers about 8.8 km², with lush evergreen forest and a coastline of over 12 km. The climate is tropical, with high humidity and warm temperatures year‑round. Its isolation and small population make it a unique stop for expedition cruises like Swan Hellenic, which aim to connect travellers with authentic, rarely visited communities. In this teaser, you’ll see the heart of the village, with traditional houses and a grassy main street. It’s a rare opportunity to connect with a place that blends living history with authentic island life.
