Watch next: https://youtu.be/jxg6CfYaRTc The cruise ship Mein Schiff 3 left Bremerhaven, Germany, in storm gusts and hit two container ships. Now German police are investigating the captain. It happened on Sunday, Oct 25, 2026, around 5:30 PM local time, as the TUI Cruises ship left the Stromkaje quay. Wind was about 40 km/h with gusts up to 95 km/h. Even with tugs helping, a gust pushed the ship into two moored container ships. One of them, the MSC Victorine, has a crack about 10 meters long. Mein Schiff 3's lifeboats, their cranes and parts of the hull were damaged, all above the waterline. On board were 2,428 guests and 922 crew. Nobody was hurt. Police estimate the damage in the millions and have opened an administrative offence case over the captain's duty of care. The case against sailing: travel lawyer Paul Degott told RTL the ship was safe at the pier and could have waited out the storm. The case for the captain: Bremerhaven's port captain says there is no wind ban in the port, the decision to sail is the captain's, and "the pilot is only an adviser." Police have not said the captain broke a rule, and TUI Cruises has not commented on the decision to sail. What happens to the guests? TUI Cruises cancelled the 20 day Canary Islands cruise. Guests get a full refund and are being sent home by train. Degott says they may also be able to claim compensation for lost holiday time. Should the cruise line pay for the lost vacation too? Yes or no? Tell me in the comments.
