Haines, Alaska Moped Tour: Chilkoot Lake, Chilkat State Park and Fort Seward

Renting a moped in Haines, Alaska turned into one of the best afternoons of this entire cruise. In this video I pick up a moped right across from the port, ride out past the Welcome to Haines sign, and head toward Chilkoot Lake, about ten miles out along the water. Along the way there is bear country, a salmon weir full of fishermen, and views that make you forget you are still technically on a shore excursion. From there I loop back through town, catch the Outside Looking In overlook on the Chilkat Peninsula, and then take on the steep gravel descent into Chilkat State Park, a genuinely nerve racking fourteen percent grade that was worth every second once I saw the glacier views on the other side. I wrap things up with a quick stop at Fort Seward before heading back to the ship. If you are cruising to Alaska and Haines is one of your ports, do not skip renting a moped here.
