Today on Raiatea, Windstar Cruises surprised me with one of the most fascinating experiences of the voyage: a visit to Anapa Pearl Farm, one of the shimmering treasures of French Polynesia. 🖤🦪✨ Raiatea—historically known as Hava’i—is the cultural heart of Polynesia, the launch point for the great navigators who sailed to Aotearoa, the Marquesas, Samoa, Tonga, and Rapa Nui more than 1,000 years ago. Twin to Tahaa and sharing the same lagoon, it’s the only island in the region with a high school and has been a center of population, tradition, and knowledge for centuries. At the farm, Patricia guided us through the extraordinary science and artistry behind the Tahitian black pearl, while Remo—the master grafter—demonstrated the delicate work that happens in their over-water reef house. Oysters here can only spend two hours out of the sea, so the entire grafting workshop sits above the lagoon. We learned how baby oysters naturally attach to ropes, how they grow for two years before the first graft, and how a tiny nucleus made from Mississippi River mussel shell is placed inside the oyster along with mantle tissue to determine color. Over the next two years, the oyster coats the bead with mother-of-pearl, creating the start of its luminous treasure. Then came the thrill: we snorkeled through the coral garden and rows of oyster baskets to spot our own oyster. Remo harvested it for us on the spot—carefully, respectfully—so the living oyster could continue its cycle with a new nucleus. Each oyster can create up to four pearls over twelve years, each one bigger and more lustrous. Walking away with my own Tahitian black pearl felt like holding a piece of Raiatea’s soul—legend, science, and ocean magic fused into something timeless. Thank you, Windstar Cruises, for this unforgettable, deeply meaningful day. 🖤✨🌊#Raiatea #DreamsOfTahiti #WindstarCruises #StarBreeze #180DegreesFromOrdinary #FrenchPolynesia #travel #luxury #pearl #blackpearl #anapapearlfarm
