One thing that surprised me while exploring Japan is that jaywalking isn’t just frowned upon, it can actually be illegal. In some situations, crossing the road outside designated crossings or ignoring traffic signals can result in penalties of up to ¥50,000 or even up to 3 months in prison. Whether these penalties are enforced depends on the circumstances, but it’s a great reminder that when you’re travelling, it’s worth learning the local laws and respecting the culture.
