Darwin’s finches may look like fairly ordinary birds, but they tell one of the most important stories in biology. In this video, I explore how differences in their beaks, diets and behaviour developed across the Galápagos, and why these birds became so closely associated with evolution and natural selection. I also look at the famous work of Peter and Rosemary Grant on Daphne Major, where scientists were able to observe natural selection happening over a remarkably short period of time. After a severe drought changed the food available, finches with deeper, stronger beaks had a better chance of surviving and reproducing. The story becomes even more remarkable when you look at the specialists that evolved from these closely related birds. From cactus finches to tool-using woodpecker finches and even blood-drinking vampire finches, they show just how adaptable life can become when different populations face different ecological pressures. ________________________________________________________________________________ Planning a trip to the Galápagos Islands? 🏝️ Paul McFarling is a Galápagos guide and tour organiser with over 30 years of experience helping travellers explore the islands, wildlife, landscapes, and natural history of this extraordinary destination.
