I Wasn’t Ready for Sitka, Alaska | Norwegian Joy Cruise Port Day
For the Sitka Sound Shuttle Reservations: https://reservation.sitkadock.com/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sitka, Alaska turned out to be a much stranger day than I expected. 🇺🇸⛪ Today we’re exploring Sitka during our Norwegian Joy Alaska cruise, and the highlight of the day is a visit inside St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral, one of the most fascinating historic buildings in Alaska. The original cathedral was built in the 1840s during the days of Russian America, but in 1966 a devastating fire destroyed the building. Amazingly, residents of Sitka rushed inside and saved most of the historic icons and religious treasures before the cathedral was lost. It was later reconstructed using detailed architectural drawings of the original building. And yes… that history becomes the most productive thing I do all day, because I am also experiencing one of the worst cruise hangovers of my life. 😂 Along the way we explore Sitka’s shops, find possibly the tiniest Russian nesting doll ever created, check out a totem pole, listen to a street musician who unexpectedly gets me emotional, and eventually retreat back to Norwegian Joy for dinner and an ’80s Broadway-style show. We also spot a mysterious old cross on a tiny island from the ship, which naturally leads us to wonder whether we’ve accidentally discovered Alaska’s most scenic pet cemetery.
