Is Your Ship Card Putting You At Risk? | Solo Travel

Hello Travelers, I took a cruise with Hurtigruten’s Roald Amundsen down the east coast. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I am usually a solo traveler, and that I had an issue on one of my cruises with another passenger that made me more aware of the security risks posed by the way personal information is handled by the cruise line and the crew. If you’ve stayed at a hotel, you know that the front desk staff is usually trained to write your room number on the envelope your key card goes into and hand it to you without saying the number out loud. This is because there have been cases where women traveling solo have been attacked in their rooms after the room number was overheard when they checked in. This does not seem to be a lesson that the cruise lines have learned, unfortunately, as I have been on numerous lines where the cabin number may be on the cruise card, and where the staff commonly asks you to just tell them your cabin number, or your first and last name during interactions where others can overhear. When I went on my first Hurtigruten cruise, I found an even worse practice that I wanted to highlight. The cruise card not only had my full name, but also my passport number and country of origin. The staff also commonly asked for the cabin number during interactions that should not have required it, and while standing in line where others could not help but overhear. I am not certain if the cruise line industry just are ignoring the risk they are putting guests in, or if they are not aware, but I am hoping that by drawing attention to these practices, we can see positive change before something terrible happens to someone. I have more videos for this trip, as well as future cruises booked through the rest of this year and beyond. Thanks for watching!
