The SECRET Life of Galápagos Giant Tortoises
Giant tortoises may look slow and inactive, but over a lifetime they can travel enormous distances, follow seasonal migrations and even help shape the landscape around them. In this video, I explore their daily routine, feeding behaviour, movements between the highlands and lowlands, and the surprising distances they can cover. I also look at their breeding and nesting behaviour, what happens once the hatchlings emerge completely on their own, and why the first years of a tortoise’s life are by far the most dangerous. Those that survive eventually become so large that very little can threaten them. Finally, I explore how giant tortoises can live for well over 100 years, why it becomes so difficult to estimate the age of an older individual, and how some tortoises alive today may have been following the same seasonal journeys since the time of Charles Darwin. ________________________________________________________________________________ Planning a trip to the Galápagos Islands? 🏝️ Paul McFarling is a Galápagos guide and tour organiser with over 30 years of experience helping travellers explore the islands, wildlife, landscapes, and natural history of this extraordinary destination.
