Why Expedition Cruises Need Historians
What makes an expedition cruise different from every other cruise? The destinations matter. But the people matter just as much. While sailing aboard Aurora Expeditions’ Sylvia Earle in Iceland, I sat down with expedition guide and historian Jonathan Chester in front of the famous black church at Búðir on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. As part of a series of interviews with the expedition team, I asked Jonathan four simple questions: • What’s your name? • What do you do onboard? • What do you love most about your job? • Why should someone take an expedition cruise? Earlier in the voyage, I attended Jonathan’s lecture on Iceland’s Cod Wars. As a Newfoundlander, I was fascinated by the parallels between Iceland and Newfoundland—two North Atlantic cultures shaped by fishing, the sea, and the struggle to protect their resources. That’s what great expedition teams do. They don’t just help you see a destination. They help you understand it. Watch to hear Jonathan’s perspective on why expedition cruising creates a deeper connection with the places we visit. @aurora_expeditions @actacanada_ @virtuosoltd #ACTAImmersiveExpeditionCruise #AuroraExpeditions #SylviaEarle #Iceland #Budir #Snaefellsnes #ExpeditionCruise #History #AdventureTravel #AskSheila #ReturnOnLife
