Arriving in Alaska’s capital by cruise ship is one of those moments that immediately reminds travelers they are somewhere truly different from the rest of the United States. Juneau is one of the most unique state capitals in America. Despite serving as the capital of Alaska, it has a relatively small population of around 32,000 residents. Temperatures during the cruise season are generally cool and comfortable, often ranging between the mid-50s and low 60s Fahrenheit, though rain and fog are common throughout the year. The city sits within the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rainforest in North America, giving Juneau its dramatic combination of mountains, glaciers, forests, and coastal scenery.
