We Were Stopped for a Passport Check in Europe

Here's one travel tip I'll never ignore—and neither should you. While exploring the area where France, Germany, and Switzerland meet, we took a local tram across an international border. During the ride, police boarded the tram and conducted a passport check, asking every passenger for identification. One of our traveling companions had almost left her passport at the hotel. Fortunately, she went back to get it before we left. Most border crossings within the Schengen Area happen without any checks, but random passport inspections can and do occur. That's why I always recommend carrying your passport whenever you're crossing international borders—even on a short tram ride.
