Exclusive interview with Astrid Johannesen, Head of Cruise at Port of Gotuvik. In this interview, Astrid Johannesen of the Port of Gotuvik talks about welcoming cruise ships to a tiny Faroe Islands village, how the village shares the benefits of each visit and why the port keeps the number of ships small. Key Highlights: 1. Astrid Johannesen says the village is such a tiny destination that passengers arrive in a village of 600 people, where everything is unique. 2. She says visitors meet real people in real people’s homes and see how people actually live on the Faroe Islands, which she says they don’t get the chance to do in many other places. 3. She says the village is so small that only a few ships can visit each year, a maximum of three, four or five, which she says makes a visit special. 4. She says the port authorities and the people living in the village work closely together, because if it doesn’t work for the port or the villagers, nothing works. She says each of the 600 people should have a good experience. 5. She says many villagers are part of each visit, for example by serving the coffee and cake or performing the special Faroese chain dance. She says each port call is arranged closely with the local people, and she thinks around 40 people are engaged when a ship comes. 6. She says the reason the village does cruise is so that the people living there benefit, and that the aim is for the local community to get the financial benefit, not the municipality. 7. She says the village isn’t even a port but a harbour that works by tender, and that only a few years ago no ships visited. She says it now has a few ships every year, because passengers and cruise lines want something special, authentic and unique. 8. She says sustainability can be seen on many levels. She mentions few ships with few passengers staying in the village for a long time, and as much financial benefit as possible going back to the community. 9. She says it is important not to leave marks or footprints, so the village doesn’t want too many ships and wants certain cruise lines with a special focus on sustainability.
