Diving and Exploring in the Santa Cruz Islands as we sail to Tikopia - 1977 (International)
We sail from Tavanipupu at the east end of Guadalcanal through the Santa Cruz Islands to Tikopia, the easternmost island of the Solomons nation. But first across to San Cristobal Island, now called Makira, the easternmost large island of the Solomon Islands group. Then to Mosquito Anchorage in the small Malaupaina Island just to the north of Makira. This was known for coral reef diving and we met up with more cruising yachts there. Then across to the Santa Cruz group of islands, still a part of the Solomons country. One spot of interest was on Vanikoro Island where we dived on one of the wrecks of the French La Perouse expedition. They were last seen in Botany Bay in 1788 by the British Flinders settler group and the wrecks weren't found until the 1820's Finally we visited remote and small Tikopia, the easternmost island of the Solomon Islands country. This was a unique experience of remote island culture. We have a special dinner with the head man, Te Ariki Tafua, two Bishop Museum researchers and the school headmaster from New Zealand. Remember that photos are digitised from 50 year old 35mm slides. This revised version has French language available as well as auto dubbed commentary in many other languages.
