ONE DAY 45 MILES AWAY. Would YOU Still Go?
Stockholm, Sweden was 45 miles away from our ship — and we had only ONE DAY to experience it. Would you still go? We did. Our Sapphire Princess cruise docked in Nynäshamn, not central Stockholm, so we decided to make the trip independently instead of taking a cruise-line excursion. That meant walking to the train station, riding into Stockholm, using the ferry, exploring on foot — and keeping one eye on the clock because we still had to make the entire trip back to the ship. For anyone considering this independently, we had roughly a 25-minute walk from the ship to Nynäshamn station, followed by about an hour on the train into Stockholm. Once we reached Stockholm, the day became much more than transportation. Inside the Vasa Museum we stood beside an almost 400-year-old warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628, spent 333 years on the seabed, and is still about 98% original. From there we headed toward Gamla Stan, wandered Stockholm’s Old Town, visited the Royal Palace, tried traditional Swedish food — including smoked reindeer — and made one ferry mistake along the way. Then it was time to get back to Nynäshamn. That is when the clock started becoming a much bigger part of the story. If you are planning one day in Stockholm, visiting from the Nynäshamn cruise port, looking for things to do in Stockholm, or wondering whether Stockholm can realistically be explored independently from a cruise ship, this is what our day actually looked like.
