Exploring the City of Chester, Cheshire, England - Filmed in January 2022 and September 2025: https://youtu.be/wGta54Ji1fY . Chester is a historic city located in Cheshire, England, near the border with Wales. It is one of the best-preserved walled cities in the United Kingdom and is known for its rich Roman, medieval, and Victorian heritage. Situated on the River Dee, Chester has a population of around 80,000 and serves as a regional centre for tourism, commerce, and education. Founded as a Roman fortress around 79 AD, Chester was originally known as Deva Victrix. Remnants of its Roman origins remain visible throughout the city, particularly in its defensive city walls, amphitheatre, and street layout. The city walls form a continuous two-mile circuit around the city centre and are among the most complete in Britain. Visitors can walk along the walls, which offer elevated views of Chester’s historic architecture and the River Dee. A defining feature of Chester is its distinctive black-and-white timbered buildings and the Chester Rows—unique, two-tiered covered walkways that line the main shopping streets of Eastgate, Northgate, Bridge, and Watergate. These structures date back to the medieval period and house a mix of modern shops, cafés, and boutiques, blending historic charm with contemporary life. At the heart of the city stands Chester Cathedral, a magnificent Gothic structure that evolved from a Benedictine abbey founded in the 11th century. The cathedral features intricate stone carvings, stained glass windows, and a tranquil cloister garden. It is an active place of worship and also hosts concerts, exhibitions, and guided tours. Another major landmark is the Eastgate Clock, located above the Eastgate—the site of the original Roman entrance to the city. Installed in 1899 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, it is one of the most photographed clocks in England after Big Ben. Chester’s Roman Amphitheatre, the largest known in Britain, provides insight into the city’s ancient past. Excavated sections reveal stone seating and arena walls once used for military training and public events. Nearby, the Grosvenor Museum houses Roman artefacts, fine art, and displays about the city’s social history. The River Dee and The Groves riverside promenade offer scenic walking routes, boat cruises, and leisure activities. The Old Dee Bridge, a medieval stone crossing, connects the city centre to Handbridge and other southern districts. The riverside area also features cafés and public gardens that attract both visitors and locals. Chester is home to the Chester Racecourse, known locally as the Roodee, reputed to be the oldest racecourse still in operation in England. It hosts regular horse racing events and other entertainment throughout the year. The city centre also includes a range of restaurants, theatres, and independent shops, blending history with a modern, vibrant atmosphere. The Storyhouse, Chester’s cultural venue, combines a theatre, cinema, and library under one roof, making it a focal point for the city’s arts scene. Overall, Chester combines ancient heritage, architectural beauty, and a lively modern culture, making it one of England’s most distinctive and picturesque historic cities.
