Taking an older parent on a big trip can come with a lot of questions — especially when mobility becomes part of the equation. But after taking our 86-year-old Mom on an Alaska cruise, we realized something we hadn't really thought about before: cruising can actually make traveling with an older parent easier. The ship is basically a floating hotel. You unpack once, your room comes with you, and you don't have to constantly pack up, get in a car, change hotels, or figure out how to get from one destination to the next. For someone with mobility issues, that can make a HUGE difference. Mom was doing remarkably well for 86, but there was no way she could have managed all the walking without the mobility device we rented for her. We also learned that a little planning ahead can make cruising with an older parent much smoother. In this video, we're sharing what worked for us, including our accessible cabin, getting Mom onboard, how the cruise staff helped us with her mobility device, planning excursions, and what happened when one of our plans in Sitka didn't work out. We'll also talk about our experience renting Mom's mobility device through Cloud of Goods and how well the rental process worked with the cruise line. Was everything perfect? No. Did we have to plan ahead? Absolutely. But overall, taking Mom on this cruise was a wonderful experience — and it made us realize that cruising might be one of the easier ways to travel with an older parent who has mobility challenges.
