Progreso, Mexico Cruise Port — Is It Worth Getting Off the Ship?
Is Progreso, Mexico worth getting off the cruise ship? We visited Progreso aboard the Disney Magic and explored independently—without a shore excursion—to find out what this unusual cruise port is really like. Progreso, Mexico is a cruise port on some Disney Cruise Line itineraries, but it's very different from what many travelers expect. In this video, we share what it actually felt like getting off the Disney Magic in Progreso—walking the long pier, taking the free shuttle into town, exploring on our own, visiting the beach, and returning to the ship—so you can decide for yourself whether Progreso is worth getting off the ship. This is not an excursion review and it's not a highlight reel. We intentionally let parts of the experience breathe, with moments of minimal narration, to show what the port and town actually feel like when you explore independently rather than on a guided tour. We were off the Disney Magic and back onboard in about three hours, including the pier walk, shuttle ride, walking through town, time at the beach, and the return trip. We also share observations about the scale of the Progreso cruise pier, the shuttle process, the port environment, and why this stop felt very different from other cruise ports we've visited. Progreso may work well for travelers interested in organized excursions, including trips to Mayan ruins farther inland. For us, this independent walk-off experience helped clarify what we personally value most on a cruise day—and that contrast is part of what this video explores.
