Messina Sicily Cruise Port Guide | Self-Touring Messina & What I'd Do Differently

Join us as we explore **Messina, Sicily** on our own during a port stop aboard Royal Caribbean's *Brilliance of the Seas*! 🇮🇹🚢 When we docked in Messina, we decided to skip a shore excursion and **self-tour the city on foot**. As soon as we left the port, we were met by plenty of taxi drivers and tour guides offering their services. A firm but polite "no, thank you" was all it took, and we continued exploring on our own. We walked through the town, browsed some of the local shops, and visited several of Messina's most notable sights, including the famous **Astronomical Clock** and **Orion Fountain** in Piazza Duomo, right beside the **Cathedral of Messina**. We also discovered **Villa Mazzini**, a lovely park that was one of the unexpected highlights of our walk. The park is home to lots of turtles and koi fish, making it a peaceful place to stop and enjoy the surroundings. On our way back to the ship, we also passed the **Neptune Fountain**. While we enjoyed walking around Messina and getting a glimpse of everyday local life, this was one port where, in hindsight, I think **booking an excursion would have been the better choice**. Messina itself was lovely, but it felt very local and didn't have as many major tourist attractions as some of the other ports we visited. Excursions from Messina offered opportunities to visit **Mount Etna** or travel to **Taormina**, and if I were visiting this port again, those are the kinds of excursions I would seriously consider.
