After our disappointing Cagney’s experience aboard Norwegian Aqua, we booked the restaurant again on Norwegian Joy to see whether the dry steak, bland seasoning, tiny side portions, stale dessert and impersonal atmosphere were isolated problems—or signs of a bigger change across Norwegian Cruise Line. This Norwegian Joy Cagney’s Steakhouse review covers the entire experience, including the service, restaurant atmosphere, steak quality, side portions, presentation and dessert. The Joy delivered a noticeably better evening than the Aqua. The staff made the meal fun and personal, the traditional steakhouse atmosphere felt more upscale, the side portions were improved, the presentation was stronger and the seven-layer chocolate cake tasted fresh. Unfortunately, the most important part of a steakhouse meal was still the weakest link. Although the steak was better seasoned and more attractively presented than the one we received on Norwegian Aqua, the quality of the beef still did not match the Cagney’s experience we remembered from previous years. During our visit, staff members indicated that Norwegian had changed beef suppliers. We also heard speculation that the restaurant may have moved from prime cuts to choice cuts, but that specific detail was not confirmed. We explain why that distinction matters and share a possible workaround for cruisers who still want a satisfying red-meat dinner aboard an NCL ship. The service, sides, presentation, atmosphere and dessert were significantly better—but the underlying beef-quality issue prevented the meal from feeling like the destination dining experience Cagney’s once offered.
