Approaching Juneau: A Capital City That Doesn't Look Like One

What's the one thing you assume you'll recognize before you actually see it? A capital city, even a small one, still comes with an idea attached — buildings, a skyline, something that reads as "downtown" from a distance. Juneau doesn't announce itself that way. The approach is homes built right into the hillside, trees all the way down to the water, nothing stacked or obvious until you're much closer than you'd expect. So what would it feel like to arrive somewhere that doesn't perform for you on the way in? Pale green water. A shoreline that looks more like a neighborhood tucked into a forest than a port.
