Aitutaki Lagoon & One Foot Island, Cook Islands
A short collage from our day on Aitutaki Lagoon in the Cook Islands with Bishop's Cruises: clear turquoise water, white-sand motus, sandbars you can walk across, snorkeling stops, and One Foot Island (Tapuaetai), where a tiny post office stamps passports. Meghan and I didn't know about the stamp in advance and left our passports on the boat. Aitutaki is an "almost-atoll", with a large triangular lagoon ringed by a barrier reef and dotted with small motus. Private dinghies aren't allowed in the lagoon, so a tour boat is the way to see it. A typical day includes Akaiami (a stop on the TEAL flying-boat "Coral Route" in the 1950s), snorkeling, and lunch on One Foot Island. The name Tapuaetai means "one footprint". The traditional story is of a father and son fleeing warriors after fishing in a restricted area. The father stepped only in his son's footprints, so that just one set of tracks showed in the sand, and the boy survived.
