Carnival's New Rewards Math Is RIDICULOUS
Carnival keeps saying its new Rewards program was modeled after airline and hotel loyalty programs. But here's where that comparison falls apart. Carnival says status is now based on spending — the more you spend, the more Stars you earn, the faster you climb. So then give me credit for the money I actually spend. If I book a cruise and pay $4,000 for myself and another adult, I don't earn Stars on that $4,000. Carnival splits the cruise-fare Stars between both guests — even if the other person paid absolutely nothing. And if that cabin-mate isn't even enrolled in the program, their half of the Stars is forfeited. Gone. Imagine charging $4,000 to your credit card and the bank saying, "Thanks, but we're giving half your rewards to the person you bought something for." That's not rewarding spending. Carnival wants to measure my loyalty by my wallet while not actually giving me credit for everything coming out of it.
