🇮🇹 Gaeta, Italy Mum and I really enjoyed our time in Gaeta, a lovely little coastal town that feels very different from some of the busier Italian ports. It’s the sort of place that’s perfect for simply getting out and wandering. We explored the narrow streets, beautiful old churches and historic buildings, and even visited the old prison, which gives a real sense of Gaeta’s fascinating past. Gaeta dates back thousands of years and has been an important Roman, medieval and military stronghold. Perched on a rocky headland overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, its history is everywhere you look. The town is also home to the Santuario della Santissima Trinità, famous for the spectacular Montagna Spaccata, the “Split Mountain” where legend says the rock opened at the moment Christ died. We loved the mix of history, character and that wonderfully relaxed Italian atmosphere. No rushing around or ticking off a huge list of sights, just strolling, discovering little corners and enjoying the views along the way.
