Here’s what we wish someone had told us before making the trip 👇 Fuel & food up in Te Anau: Te Anau is your last real stop. The 120 km drive from there to Milford Sound has zero petrol stations, cafés, or shops. Fill your tank and pack plenty of food. Smart cruise timing: Midday summer slots get expensive fast. If you're flexible, off-peak cruises are way cheaper. Always check sites like Bookme, GrabOne, or NZTT for deals before booking full price direct. Embrace the rain: Clear days are stunning, but rainy days are magic. Heavy rain creates thousands of temporary waterfalls cascading down the sheer cliffs. Don’t panic if rain is on the forecast! Watch the parking fees: Parking right next to the cruise terminal costs around $10/hour. There is free parking available, but it’s roughly a 30-minute walk to the terminal, so factor that into your schedule. Do NOT ignore the sandflies: The sandflies at Milford are relentless, especially around the water and car parks. Heavy-duty bug spray (we swear by Aerogard) is non-negotiable.
