Regensburg is the northernmost city on the Danube River. Regensburg's old town is famous for its well-preserved medieval district and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Regensburg Stone Bridge spanning the Danube was built in the 12th century and was once the most important river crossing in Central Europe. The bridge leading to the old town’s gate tower is the only remaining medieval bridge gate. The Regensburg Cathedral, built in the 13th century, is a prime example of important Gothic architecture in Germany and is also a landmark of Regensburg. Historically, Regensburg experienced multiple events of persecution against Jews, but there are also touching stories of the Schindler couple saving Jews.
