Budapest is known as the "Pearl of the Danube." Its most important landmarks are located on both banks of the Danube. On the west bank, on the Buda side, stands Buda Castle atop a steep, rocky hill. The castle was once the Hungarian Royal Palace and today houses the Hungarian National Library and National Gallery. To the north of the hill stands Matthias Church, and adjacent to it is Fisherman's Bastion, overlooking the Danube. On the gentler east bank, on the Pest side, are the famous Hungarian Parliament Building, as well as the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Gresham Palace. On the Pest side, Heroes' Square is surrounded by the Hungarian State Opera and the Palace of Arts.
