Our canceled Alaska cruise saga isn't over yet—and now we're talking about the bill. After a mechanical issue interrupted our back-to-back cruises aboard Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas, we were required to disembark and spend four nights in Vancouver while the ship underwent repairs. As back-to-back cruisers, we had a decision to make: fly home to Houston and then fly back to Vancouver a few days later—or stay in Vancouver and wait for our next sailing. Last-minute international airfare home and back would have cost us approximately $2,500, before adding another hotel stay when we returned to Vancouver. So we stayed. Our hotel for those four nights cost approximately $2,200. We deliberately chose a less expensive hotel than the one we'd stayed at before the cruise and tried to keep our expenses reasonable. Royal Caribbean offered back-to-back guests $400 total toward hotel expenses for those four nights. Not $400 per night. Not $400 per person. $400 total. And that's where we want YOUR opinion. Are we being unreasonable? Royal offered passengers up to $400 per person toward airfare to return home, which we think was objectively reasonable for guests whose vacation simply ended with the canceled cruise. But our situation was different. We were in the middle of five consecutive back-to-back cruises aboard Serenade of the Seas, and only 12 back-to-back passengers from the canceled sailing were continuing onto this one. We're not asking Royal to pay for extravagance. We're asking whether $400 is reasonable compensation toward approximately $2,200 in unavoidable hotel expenses caused by the mechanical interruption. Lisa has been working her way through Club Royale, since these cruises were booked through casino offers, and at the time we recorded this update she was still trying to get a resolution. And apparently Royal picked an interesting person with whom to negotiate. 😂 As Jon explains in the video, Lisa spent roughly 20 years as a hostage negotiator in her previous career. Those skills may be coming out of retirement for this one. We're currently back aboard Serenade and recorded this update from Sitka, Alaska, where we're very happy to be cruising again—but the Vancouver reimbursement story isn't finished. So tell us in the comments: Would you accept $400? Do you think we're being reasonable asking Royal for more? What would YOU have done—stayed in Vancouver or flown home? We'll share another update when we finally have an answer. Until then… Pivot. Don't Panic. 👍 Like the video if you've been following our Vancouver saga. 🔔 Subscribe to Harrison Adventures so you don't miss the final outcome. Your adventure. Your vacation.
