We Took Copenhagen’s “FREE” Walking Tour… Then It Got DARK
We took a “FREE” Copenhagen walking tour expecting beautiful streets, Danish history and famous Copenhagen attractions—but this tour through Denmark's capital got DARK in a hurry. Our Copenhagen walking tour begins near Copenhagen Central Station and Tivoli Gardens as we make our way through the city to meet our guide and find out whether one of these tip-based “free” walking tours is actually worth doing. What starts with bicycles, beer, Tivoli Gardens and Copenhagen City Hall quickly turns into some surprisingly dark Copenhagen history. During the tour we discover the old Copenhagen City Hall and courthouse, where we learn about the public punishments and beheadings that once took place in the area. That's definitely not something we expected to hear when we signed up for a Copenhagen sightseeing tour! But Copenhagen keeps getting more interesting. We explore historic streets and hidden passages, hear the story behind Carlsberg beer, visit Christiansborg Palace and its Royal Riding Court, learn about Danish architecture and local traditions, and hear some surprisingly juicy stories about Denmark's royal family. Christiansborg itself has quite a history—the tour takes us through the story of the earlier palaces that burned before the present complex was built. And because this is Hubbard's Journey, things don't stay completely serious. Michael accidentally heads into the women's public bathroom, we hunt down something local to eat, and eventually try a loaded Danish hot dog in Copenhagen. Our guide even gets into the story of King Frederik and Queen Mary, including how they met in Australia and some of the rumors surrounding Denmark's royal couple.
