Beacon Rock Hike: Essential Columbia River Gorge & Washington Hiking Tips!
At the summit of Beacon Rock, located near Stevenson Washington, we learn about the formation of this natural wonder. During the Ice Age, floods and raging water filled the Gorge to within roughly 150 feet of this spot, stripping away softer rock, leaving Beacon Rock standing as a resistant, basalt tower. Needless to say, it was an exhilarating trek, and as we start our descent, we can discuss what people may not like about the hike. First, the trail can be popular, and crowds can be heavy during summer weekends and holidays. As such, because the path is narrow in places, passing other hikers can feel tight. Second, some visitors also note that the exposed sections, and visible drop-offs, can be uncomfortable if you have a strong fear of heights. And finally, the summit can be windy, and the sun can be hot once you leave the forested lower section.
