Exploring Stanhope Beach in Prince Edward Island National Park: The Return of PEI Bald Eagles!
Welcome to Prince Edward Island National Park, in Canada. Here, Stanhope Beach is a pristine, quieter coastal stretch known for its wide sandscapes and ecological vulnerability. Its unique ecosystem is shaped by the dramatic intersection of the land and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, creating a dynamic environment that supports a diverse array of wildlife. We sighted a bald eagle on the beach, and they are one of the region's greatest revival stories. Back in the mid-to-late 1950s, PEI's nesting eagle population dropped to zero, due to unregulated hunting, habitat loss, and the heavy use of the pesticide DDT. After DDT was banned, and conservation laws were put in place, a single nesting pair returned to Brudenell in the late 1960s. Today, wildlife experts estimate there are around 50 active breeding pairs, and an overall population of roughly 500 to 600 eagles across the island.
