Oak Alley Plantation: Louisiana Plantation History in Vacherie Louisiana
Welcome to the historic Oak Alley Plantation, located in Vacherie, Louisiana. This expansive estate, sits on a sixty-three-acre site along the Mississippi River. Today, the vast property serves as an educational museum, dedicated to documenting its complex history, as a former sugarcane plantation. A short walk from the entrance, we reach the slave quarters area, where six of 20 original quarters have been reconstructed, located very near their original sites. Oak Alley's roots, are firmly embedded in its history as a sugar plantation, and consequently, in slavery. When Jacques and Celina Roman acquired Oak Alley in 1836, it was a plantation whose primary residents were 57 field slaves. That same year, Jacques purchased 49 slaves from his mother's estate auction, bringing the total number of slaves to 106.
