Exclusive interview with Paul Britton, Harbour Master & CEO of Dart Harbour. In this interview, Paul Britton of Dart Harbour talks about how his port manages cruise ships, the limits it has set, the new shore excursions on offer and the port’s work with Cruise Britain. Key Highlights: 1. Paul Britton says the energy at the event is really good, with lots of cruise lines there, and that people seem interested in the ports. He calls it an exciting time. 2. He says the port is working to make sure cruise ships don’t overwhelm the destination, and has put in limits so that only a certain number of ships can come each year, with maximum capacities. 3. He says the port is looking at ways for passengers to leave the port without using coaches, such as steam trains and ferries, to try to minimise the over-tourism impact. 4. He says the port has put a lot of work into new port experiences, with about 10 new tours this year. 5. He says the tours range from visiting an old manor house, meeting the lord and lady of the manor and going out with a shepherd to see the moorlands, to having a cream tea on a small island that inspired a couple of Agatha Christie books. He also mentions canoes and driving steam trains. 6. He says the aim is to give people the best opportunity to see the destination. 7. He says the port doesn’t see over-tourism as a major problem. He says it takes relatively small ships, rarely more than a thousand passengers, and has lots of space for passengers to enjoy the cultural heritage without getting in its way. 8. He says he thinks the passengers add to the town rather than subtract from it. 9. He says the port works in partnership with Cruise Britain, and is looking at ways of developing Cruise Britain as a whole as well as the individual ports.
