Sorry Princess, But This Is a BIG Mistake

Princess Cruises, I think you’ve made the WRONG call. And it’s not just about the Sanctuary Collection. Princess Cruises has announced that its ship-within-a-ship concept, the Sanctuary Collection, is expanding to Royal Princess and eventually other Royal-class ships. While the concept works well on Sun Princess and Star Princess, I believe there’s a significant problem with bringing it to some of the older ships in the fleet. Why? Because Royal Princess and Regal Princess have limited pool and outdoor deck space to begin with. Turning one of those spaces into an exclusive, adults-only retreat raises some serious questions about what the changes mean for everyone else onboard. And that’s just the beginning. I’ve received messages and comments from frustrated Princess passengers, with concerns ranging from the late announcement and confusing rollout to the potential impact on their next cruise. I’ll explain what’s changing, why the design of these ships matters, and why I think Princess needs to take a closer look at the passenger experience. But there’s a bigger issue here, too. From changes to OceanNow and the pricing of Princess Plus and Premier to reported changes in crew levels and entertainment, I’m looking at the broader direction of Princess Cruises and asking a difficult question: is the cruise line losing sight of what made it special in the first place? I want Princess to succeed. A healthy, profitable cruise line is good for passengers and the industry. But there’s a difference between improving a product and making changes that risk alienating the very people who support it. As always, this is my independent opinion, based on my experience as a cruise reviewer and feedback from passengers.
