Today is Cruise Day 20 of our 50-day Grand Mediterranean Odyssey aboard the Island Princess, and we had an absolutely glorious day visiting Rome, Italy! If you're planning to visit Rome on a cruise, there are so many things to consider. Your ship will dock in Civitavecchia, some distance from Rome, and you'll need to decide how you want to spend your time. Today I'm sharing our experience and some practical tips to help you make the most of your visit! We'll talk about taking the train into Rome, booking a cruise line excursion, using a private tour company, or hiring a private driver. We actually cancelled our Princess "Rome on Your Own" excursion and hired a private driver instead, and we're so glad we did! We visited the Roman Forum area, enjoyed beautiful views over Rome, visited some of our favorite places, stopped for wonderful gelato at Giolitti, and even had time for a quick visit to St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. I'll also share some helpful tips about the cruise port, transportation, restrooms, sightseeing, tickets, and making sure you get back to your ship on time.
