The Golden Train - Norway's Gold, Troll Wall & Rauma Line | Andalsnes to Bjorli
Norway's Rauma Line - from Andalsnes to Bjorli on the summer-only Golden Train (Gulltoget). This is officially one of Europe's most beautiful train rides - up the Romsdalen valley past the Rauma River, the famous Troll Wall (Trollveggen - Europe's tallest vertical rock face at 1000m), and the amazing Kylling Bridge which takes the line through 3 levels in a turning tunnel. HISTORY - WHY IT'S CALLED THE GOLDEN TRAIN: In April 1940 when Germany invaded Norway, the government had to save the national gold reserves - 50 tonnes of gold, 818 crates of bars and coins worth 54 million dollars in 1940. It was trucked from Oslo to Lillehammer, then put on a train. On 19th April 1940 that train ran down this exact line - the Rauma Line - to Andalsnes. The town was being bombed by the Germans, the train was hidden at Romsdalshorn just outside town, then the gold was split between British cruisers HMS Galatea and HMS Glasgow and shipped to the UK, then to America to fund the government in exile. 49 tonnes were saved. You ride the same line today - the summer tourist service is called the Golden Train for that reason. Lonely Planet has called it Europe's most beautiful railway.
