Why Cruise Lines Choose Tenerife as a Base | Seatrade Cruise | Enrique García Arroba Peinado
Exclusive interview with Enrique García Arroba Peinado, Director of Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In this interview, the Director of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife explains how the Tenerife cruise port is working to attract quality cruise tourism, reduce its carbon footprint and grow cruise traffic. Key Highlights: 1. He says the port authority has held meetings with cruise operators and shipping lines and collected their views on strengthening cruise traffic in Tenerife. He calls the meetings very satisfactory. 2. He says Tenerife is promoted as a quality cruise destination, with activities beyond the Teide volcano and the beaches. The port also offers facilities so ships can use it as a home port or a port of call. 3. He says the port has worked for years to reduce its carbon footprint, using European funds, solar panels, and support for LNG as a ship fuel. 4. He says a shore power (onshore power supply) system is planned and in the bidding phase. Ships would connect to the electrical grid instead of using fuel while docked, which cuts pollution and noise. 5. He says the Port of Granadilla will receive the largest investments in the coming years as an industrial port. It is also planned to help move the Santa Cruz refinery and free up land in the city. 6. He says the port community, the city and the Cabildo (island government) work together so visitors have a route, food and shopping, and the city benefits too. He also says there is real cruise demand to grow traffic to the smaller islands.
