Cruising to Belize and thinking of a Mayan ruins tour? Watch this first - honest tips from our chaotic but memorable excursion day. We booked an independent Mayan ruins and river wildlife tour through Shore Excursions Group for our Belize port day. The ruins and wildlife were well worth it, but a few things caught us out along the way. Here's what happened and what we'd tell anyone booking a similar tour, so you can make your own decision. Our tips from the day: - Our ship anchored about five miles offshore, and the tender took 35 minutes in choppy water - Expect some confusion at the port - we were driven to another dock to register before the tour began - Bad weather can cancel marine tours, so the land tours may be busier - Don't get stuck at the back of the van or the boat - we had motion sickness, a petrol smell and engine fumes - Doing the ruins first means the boat brings you back along the coast to the tender dock Plus the Mayan ruins, howler monkeys, crocodiles, manatees - and a minibus driver we can only describe as a maniac.
