This Hotel Group Refuses to Use MSG | Sotis Hotel Sustainability | THINC Indonesia | Deddy
In this interview with Travel And Tour World at THINC Indonesia, Deddy P. Effendi, COO of PT SUNGAI MAS INTERNASIONAL, discusses the group's approach to sustainability, community engagement, and its expanding portfolio of boutique hotels and luxury resorts across Indonesia. Key highlights: 1. PT SUNGAI MAS INTERNASIONAL manages Sotis Hotel Management and Sotis Hotel Brand, as well as Desa Kitsune and Capkaroso, a luxury resort in Sumba. 2. The group has a new brand in the pipeline for Kumalas, focused on serviced apartments. 3. Community engagement philosophy: use 99% local resources, believing that developing local people is the best form of community engagement. 4. In Sumba, the group works closely with the community while also preserving nature for the future of tourism. 5. On sustainability, the group focuses heavily on food waste management sourcing materials from local farmers and ensuring near-zero waste in the kitchen. 6. They avoid MSG entirely, making their own chicken bouillon from bones and using all parts of vegetables to minimize waste. 7. Sotis Hotel Management is expanding, with two new hotels in the pipeline, one in Jakarta and one in Punggolas. 8. The Jakarta property will focus on wellness, centered on a "body, soul, and mind" concept, emphasizing truly listening to the body rather than just productivity-driven exercise. 9. Sotis Hotel is positioned as a boutique hotel, offering yoga through partnerships with local tenants for wellness activities. 10. The group actively opens its hotels to the community, for example, hosting a yoga session with the India Embassy at one of its Jakarta properties. 11. Target customers vary by property: Block M targets curious, hype-seeking families and younger travelers; Pejompongan targets business travelers near government areas; Kemang caters to expats and foreigners seeking relaxed stays; Kupang targets foreign travelers interested in eastern Indonesia destinations like Rote; Bali targets large families via three-bedroom villas. 12. Desa Kitsune is positioned as an F&B compound featuring the Maison Sune fashion brand, a coffee shop, and a Mediterranean restaurant, targeting both domestic and foreign guests. 13. Capkaroso is a luxury resort targeting 99% European travellers seeking secluded, quiet experiences, combined with local cultural activities and water sports. 14. Sotis differentiates itself through strong F&B programming, every property has its own distinct culinary identity, meaning menus vary property to property rather than following a standardized hotel-chain approach.
