Could rising fuel prices mean fuel surcharges for cruise passengers — or even changes to the way cruise ships operate? Today Allison talks about fuel costs and why they matter so much to the cruise industry. Many cruise lines reserve the right to impose a fuel surcharge under certain circumstances, and with fuel prices getting so much attention right now, cruisers are understandably asking questions. But a surcharge isn't the only possible effect. Fuel costs can influence how fast ships travel, how itineraries are planned and potentially how much time ships spend in port. Allison explains why slowing a ship down can make such an enormous difference in fuel consumption. Then we tackle another question that worries cruisers: What happens when a cruise is oversold? Allison explains the cruise industry's moveover offers — and some of them can be extremely generous! Depending on the offer, passengers may be able to move to another sailing, essentially cruise for free, and receive what they originally paid as refundable onboard credit. Does having a guarantee cabin mean you're first to get bumped? Allison explains why cruisers shouldn't panic when they hear that moveover offers are being made. She also shares our own experience from 2019, when Princess kept sweetening a moveover offer — right up until they actually called us at the airport!
