Thunder Hole Acadia & The Secret History of the 1947 Bar Harbor Fire! 🌲🔥
After admiring Thunder Hole, in Acadia National Park in Maine, it was time to hop back in the car, and continue our journey along the Park Loop Road. It was amazing how quickly the landscape turned from shoreline, into dense woodlands. Red spruce, balsam fir, and eastern hemlock dominate the landscape, thriving in the park’s cool, moist climate and acidic soils. Their year-round greenery creates a stark contrast, to the deciduous patches of white birch and aspen, you’ll spot in open areas. Many of those deciduous zones exist because of the 1947 Bar Harbor Fire, which burned 30% of Mount Desert Island. That fire reshaped the forest, leaving behind the faster-growing birch and aspen, that are now slowly being replaced by spruce and fir as the ecosystem recovers.
