At the time it was completed, the John Day Dam was the largest hydroelectric dam in the United States by generating capacity, and it remains one of the most significant. Its turbines were built to handle enormous volumes of water, converting the river’s force into electricity, that supplies power across the Pacific Northwest. Today, the 16 turbine-generator dam, has the capacity to provide roughly 2,160 megawatts of power — enough electricity to serve well over a million homes. This generating capacity is comparable to many large fossil-fuel or nuclear power plants — and since it’s hydroelectric, its electricity is carbon-free.
