Inside the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria Oregon: Brave US Coast Guard Heroes!
We learned about the brave U.S. Coast Guard crews, at exhibits in the Columbia River Maritime Museum, in Astoria Oregon. Not only were the crews important, but specialized rescue boats were used in these conditions. This 44-foot motor lifeboat was built to face heavy surf, reaching people where other vessels could not. We explore displays like the Coxswain's Dilemma, where we are tested with the difficult decisions lifeboat crews had to make. And then transition to the wider story of the working waterfront, where fishing and trade defined the river. As fishing grew, preserving the catch became essential—from early methods, to canning and freezing. Astoria soon became known as the salmon canning capital of the world.
