The Cruise Industry Is Running Out of Time
Two years ago, over 1,200 Australians signed a federal petition asking for a five-year extension to the cruise industry's exemption under the Coastal Trading Act. On 16 August 2024, Minister Catherine King granted two years instead - and said that time would be used to complete an independent review and act on its findings. That review happened. The final report was reportedly delivered to government in late 2025. As of today, it hasn't been made public, and there's no announced government response - while the exemption itself still expires on 31 December 2026. In this video I break down: What the 2024 petition actually asked for, and what King's response said The timeline of the independent review, from its 2024 announcement to the unreleased final report The real 2024-25 cruise industry numbers - record passenger demand, but fewer ship visits and falling economic output Why cruise lines don't wait around for regulatory certainty, and what "we continue to wait" is actually costing Australia This isn't a pile-on. It's a straight question: the government commissioned a review, the review was delivered, and Australians - cruise passengers, regional ports, tour operators, everyday businesses - are still waiting for an answer with the clock running out.
