Brisbane’s Olympic Hotel Problem that Cruise Ships Will Fix
Could cruise ships solve Brisbane's 2032 Olympics hotel shortage? Queensland tourism leaders just called for cruise ships to fill a housing gap of up to 10,000 rooms — and it's not the first time the idea has floated. In this video, I break down the real numbers behind Brisbane's accommodation crisis, walk through the Olympic cities that have already done exactly this (Athens 2004, Sydney 2000, Rio 2016), and lay out my own theory on which ships could realistically end up berthed in Brisbane come 2032 — and where. You'll learn: why Brisbane's only mega-ship terminal can currently handle just one vessel at a time, how Team USA basketball has quietly used cruise ships as its Olympic housing for two decades, what a genuine capacity crunch looks like when you compare ship berths to real athlete delegation numbers, and why building permanent hotel towers for a two-week event carries its own risks for Brisbane's property market. This is speculation grounded in public reporting and Olympic history — no ship name has been confirmed by any cruise line, Olympics organiser, or government body, and I say so clearly in the video. But if the pattern from Athens, Sydney, and Rio holds, Brisbane 2032 won't be the first Games to turn to the water for its overflow accommodation.
