Port of Sydney Nova Scotia: Giant Fiddle & Canadian Merchant Navy History
Today, we are taking a quick glimpse of the Port of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Right at the cruise terminal stands the Giant Fiddle — over 60 feet tall, built in 2005 to celebrate Cape Breton's strong Celtic and Acadian musical heritage. It plays, as you walk around the port. Near the waterfront, DeGarthe's bronze sculpture, A Land of Our Own, pays tribute to Cape Breton's immigrant settlers. We also find an anchor, that honors the Canadian Merchant Navy, and Sydney’s role, as a vital supply port during World War 2. Mariner's park is also dedicated to these seamen, a picturesque setting right along the harbor. A modest green space, it sits within a historically significant stretch of waterfront, as it was one of the primary staging points, for Allied convoys crossing the Atlantic during the war.
