Wolf Park: Wolf Socialization Secrets & Wolf Behavior Up Close | In Case You're Wondering
Today we are at Wolf Park, located in Battle Ground Indiana. The park was founded by Dr. Erich Klinghammer in 1972. He was an ethologist, specializing in animal behavior. Originally studying birds, he switched to wolves after realizing he had a severe bird allergy. Wolves are neophobic, meaning they have an instinctual fear of new things. They also have a flight distance of close to 370 feet, the distance at which they will move away from humans. So researchers have often used techniques like aerial observation, radio collars, and camera traps to study their behavior. But Dr. Klinghammer wanted to try and observe behavior firsthand. In order to do this, he socialized the wolves here. Socialization starts when pups are only 10 days old, and lasts until they are 6 months old.
